Le lecteur désireux de découvrir Saint-Simon n’avait jusqu’ici d’autre choix que le décousu de l’anthologie ou la longue haleine de l’exhaustivité. La présente édition ouvre une troisième voie d’approche, en proposant de découvrir un petit bijou narratif : le récit, autonome au sein des Mémoires, des manœuvres de cour menées par le mémorialiste lui-même pour sceller selon son intérêt et ses vues le destin conjugal du troisième petit-fils de Louis XIV. C’est une narration conduite tambour battant, pensée, construite et écrite comme un vrai roman – qui de surcroît est un roman vrai. On y découvre, trépidants de vie, un récit à suspens et rebondissements, une galerie de figures et de scènes burinées ou colorées, souvent drôles, parfois terribles, et surtout une leçon sur le pouvoir, ses intrigues et ses bassesses, ses triomphes et ses déceptions – une leçon sur l’art de monter une cabale (on dirait aujourd’hui un lobby) qui n’a pas pris une ride.

Patrick Dandrey is professor at the University of Paris-Sorbonne. President of the Société Jean de La Fontaine, specialist of this poet’s work, of Molière’s plays and of 17th-century French literature, he has also studied the history of melancholy and diseases of the spirit and soul since antiquity (nostalgia, lycanthropy, possession, fanaticism, lovesickness) beginning with his doctoral thesis on medicine in Molière’s comedies. On these subjects, he has written more than one hundred fifty articles, twenty books and as many critical editions, published by Les Belles Lettres, H. Champion, Flammarion, Gallimard, Hachette and Klincksieck, where he directs several editorial series. He directs the Fabula Numerica program under the auspices of OBVIL (Observatoire de la Vie Littéraire; The Observatory of Literary Life), a digital humanities project of LabEx Sorbonne Universities (University of Paris-Sorbonne and Pierre-et-Marie-Curie).

French diplomat Louis de Rouvroy with title of duc de Saint-Simon wrote memoirs, a valuable historical source, of the court of Louis XIV. This grandee served as a soldier. A mother bore him at the Hôtel Selvois, 6 Rue Taranne, demolished in 1876 to make way for the Boulevard Saint-Germain.
