Luke Herrmann (b. 1932) read History at the University of Oxford (1952-55) before becoming Assistant Editor of the Illustrated London News. From 1956-67 he worked in the Department of Western Art at the Ashmolean Museum before taking a lectureship at University of Leicester in 1967, eventually becoming Chair of the Department of History of Art. Upon his retirement from the University of Leicester in 1986 he continued to contribute to the field as an independent art historian, through publications and public lectures.
