The town of Lichfield is celebrating Festival week. The highlight of this year’s Festival is a reconstruction of the siege of the cathedral by Parliamentarian troops during the Civil War. The police have big problems: assassination threats have been issued against the guest of honour, Polish Premier Kosminski, reputed to be descended from Jack the Ripper; the priceless Lichfield Gospels are under threat of vandalism and theft; and they receive a tip off that the Antichrist is scheduled for a personal appearance and the man in the black fedora is at the centre of it all.

John Mayo, of the secret Government Department codenamed Operation Werewolf, loses his wife of only a few years, and heads away from the memories to recover his wits. He ends up in the Welsh town of Knighton which has recently come to grips with the graffiti and terrorism of Welsh National Activists, as well as a number of mysterious deaths seemingly through vampirism. Mayo believes he sees his dead wife among the vampires, and investigates. As the death toll mounts and the plot complicates, he fights his way to the bottom of the whole affair to find that all the different strands of trouble actually stem from the same place.

Throughout the UK and Europe, the forces of evil, led by Satan's disciple, were massing worldwide to overthrow democracy. Bombs, shootings, vehicles mowing down unsuspecting pedestrians in the streets. Death and destruction were rife. Military and police were stretched. A terrorist, reputed to have a connection with the Dark Powers, was organising a massive army of fanatical murderers. He had to be located and killed before sheer evil ruled the world. There was one man who just might be able to achieve this, John Mayo, known as the Man in the Black Fedora. He is summoned out of retirement by Counter Terrorism Command and given the task of achieving a seemingly impossible mission against overwhelming odds.
