In the West, towns, like people, could become too big for their britches—to quote a phrase coined by Davy Crockett in his book, An Account of Col. Crockett's Tour to the North and Down East, 1835. Such was the case with Waco, Texas. Since the Civil War, the frontier town had doubled in population and showed no signs of slowing down. With new industry moving in, Waco becomes a magnet for new residents of all cuts. This growth is welcomed by most, but not by all. When the construction of a bridge over the Brazos River leads to several violent deaths, the peace officers of Waco go to work to find and prosecute the culprits. In “Blood Along the Brazos,” Jubal Stone and his deputies have their hands full keeping law and order in this burgeoning town. As much as Marshal Stone despises gunfights and the shedding of blood in his streets, sometimes it’s a necessary evil.
