Wylie Judd, retired Deputy U.S. Marshal among other things, is bored with his retirement and with living in his daughter’s home. When his grandson, Hunter Mason, takes off from home after a fight with his step-father, Martin Nelson, Judd sees this as his way to get back out on the back of a horse. He follows Hunter through Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and California before catching up with him in Utah. On the way, he discovers an old nemesis and an old flame. He deals with a trio of brothers who have sworn to kill him for his killing of their fourth brother. Eventually, he saves Hunter’s life and the lives of three of his companions, then starts on the way home with Hunter. They save the life of a young woman, Madalyn Conner, and escort her to Pueblo, Colorado. Along the way, they’re ambushed by Martin and some men he hired. Judd is wounded but manages to kill Martin and several of the other men. Once back home, Hunter tells his mother he’s going back to Pueblo to be with Madalyn and Judd says he’s going to Denver to be with his old flame. Hunter invites his mother to come stay with them.
