If only I could find the right spell! At 160 years old Kedrigern is a relatively young, bachelor wizard of some reputation. He is a master magician, specializing in the performance of counter-spells, that is, magic to counteract the incantations of other spell-casters. Kedrigern is a respected member of the Wizards' Guild, though he cannot see why such an organization needs to exist. It all seems too much like the bureaucracy of the new upstart practice of alchemy. Then to Kedrigern's chagrin the Guild proposes to allow the membership of an alchemist, Professor-Doctor-Master Quintrindus. Kedrigern speaks strongly against the idea, but when it is put to the ballot he is the only person who votes against. Greatly miffed Kedrigern resigns.

Když se Kedrigern, mistr odeklínadel a protikouzel, oženil s Princeznou a usadil se v Horách tichého hromu, měl jenom jediné přání: užít si konečně toho, čeho se mu nikdy nedostávalo – klidného každodenního života nerušeného dobrodružstvím, a už vůbec ne cestováním. Jenže klidný každodenní život není stejný pro čaroděje jako pro obyčejného člověka – zvlášť ne pro čaroděje se zavedenou praxí, který je navíc špičkou ve svém oboru a jehož služby si žádají mocní tohoto světa. A tak je Kedrigern postupně přinucen vypořádat se se smrtícím suchem, vyléčit gryfa postiženého chronicky špatnou náladou, zkrotit svéhlavý létající koberec, vyzrát na škodolibé gobliny, ledového obra postiženého sběratelskou vášní nebo třeba odhalit vraha – a postarat se, aby nebyl potrestán. Je až s podivem, jak málo Kedrigernových klientů sdílí názor jeho staršího kolegy Conhoona, že by každý zakletý jedinec měl být spokojený s tím, co ho postihlo, a radovat se, že to není horší.
