Romaani talvisodasta Syyskuussa 1917 kenraaliluutnantti Carl Gustav Mannerheim siirretään reserviin Venäjän sotavoimista, koska hän ei sopeudu nykyisiin oloihin. Hänen asetoverinsa ratsuväeneversti Valdemar Viktor Stendahl valitsee toisen tien ja jää Neuvosto-Venäjälle sotilasasiantuntijaksi hyläten Helsingissä asuvan perheensä, vaimonsa ja neljä lasta.
