La cautiva es un relato sobre las relaciones entre aborígenes y blancos escrita en la Argentina del siglo XIX. Dos amantes apresados por los indios emprenden una huida desesperada a través del desierto. El relato oscila, con esquizofrenia colonial, entre una defensa a ultranza del honor cristiano y una cierta fascinación distante por el modo de vida de los indios.
