In 1908, in the woods of Exeter, RI, a small facility opened for the supposed purpose of training mentally-challenged men in a variety of trades. There was room for eight inmates. In just a few years, the facility began accepting women and children deemed to be feeble-minded. Eventually, a thousand individuals were crammed into metal beds, thrashing naked on the floor, forced to eat rotten food and drink out of toilets. Medical procedures were performed without anesthesia and the dying were left to suffer. It was all part of an American plan, a plan that impressed the likes of eugenicist Adolf Hitler. It was Rhode Island's own experiment in cleansing the state of inferior DNA.
