RAMEAU'S NEPHEW follows the discussion between a narrator-like figure and Jean-François Rameau, the nephew of the famous composer. Diderot uses the discussion to examine the Querelle des Bouffons (the French/Italian opera battle), the education of children, the nature of genius, and money. The often rambling conversation pokes fun at numerous prominent figures of the time, including some of Diderot's contemporaries within the enlightenment such as Montesquieu, Rousseau, and Voltaire. RAMEAU'S NEPHEW ridiculed a number of Diderot's enemies, some of whom were powerful enough to make trouble. The work was not published until after Diderot's death (a German translation in 1805); a French edition did not appear until 1821. This unexpurgated edition contains the complete text, with minor errors and omissions corrected.
