Leur bateau pirate est détruit sans aucune explication logique, et plus étrange encore, les corps des pirates morts ne présentent aucune blessure. Autre singularité, Harbert contracte une maladie dont l'apparition inexpliquée d'une bouteille de sulfate de quinine le sauvera. Tous ces mystères s'éclairciront lorsque les naufragés comprendront que leur île est en réalité le port secret du capitaine Nemo : c'est lui qui leur donna la boîte miraculeuse, lui qui alluma le feu qui les sauva de la tempête, lui qui détruisit le bateau et tua les pirates grâce à un pistolet électrique, lui encore qui leur fournit la bouteille qui sauva Harbert de la mort. Le capitaine Nemo ne tardera pas à mourir de vieillesse, et le volcan de l'île, entrant en éruption, ne laissera aux naufragés qu'une mince bande de terre pour se réfugier. Le navire Duncan, alerté par une bouteille à la mer du sort d'Ayrton, les sauvera d'une mort certaine.
