When war broke out in September 1939, this dream island life had to be abandoned. Knowing he may never return, Lockley began writing about the history and wildlife of his beloved island. He sent what he wrote to his friend and brother-in-law John Buxton - a naturalist captured by the Germans in Norway in 1940 and they form this book.
