Leylâ Erbil is one of the leading female contemporary writers of Turkey, author of four novels and three collections of short stories, a book of essays and a biographical text about one of the best woman writers in the Turkish language, Tezel Özlü, who died in her early forties. Educated in Istanbul, she has also worked as a translator. In the 1960s she was involved in the activities of the Turkish Labor Party, which was the most influential socialist party at the time. Her stories are usually based on emotional and sociological conflicts of individuals and the society. Whether it is a love story or the story of a family or about the political and social developments of society, she usually presents contradictory states and situations and motivates the reader to deepen his/her thought about the matter. One of the author's main principles is that her works are not to be nominated for any of the literary contests or for any organizations that distribute awards.
