On April first, 2014, two young Dutch girls Lisanne Froon and Kris Kremers went for a hike in the mountains outside the village of Boquete, Panama, where they were about to start two weeks of volunteer work. Nobody saw them leaving. They never returned. After their disappearance was noted, the biggest search and rescue operation in Panamanian history got underway. Nothing was found until months later, in June 2014, the backpack of the girls was found in a river. Not much later, the first remains were found. The disappearance and subsequent death of the girls has never been satisfactorily explained. According to the Panamanian and Dutch authorities, it was an accident: the girls got lost and perished. But was it an accident? Many facts surrounding the case point towards a different cause. What do the mysterious night pictures which were found on the girls' camera, recovered from their backpack, signify? They were taken a full week after they disappeared. The records of their phones, which were also recovered from the backpack, told the police they tried to call for help several times during the first days of their disappearance. Why? And how is it possibles the camera and the phones were recovered in such good conditions? Was it part of a plan to cover up something? Authors Marja West and Jürgen Snoeren dove into the case. They talked to people who were directly involved with the case, key witnesses and participants of the search and rescue operation. They struck a partnership with the former District Attorney of the case, Betzaïda Pittí, who for the very first time told her story. They also got unique access to the complete police files and autopsy reports. They tell the story of their quest for answers and are finally able to reconstruct what happened to the girls in their final days. Lost in the Jungle offers an unique insight in this fascinating story which captivated the world in 2014 and still attracts the attention of many people world wide.
