This extraordinary collection brings together all of Orson Scott Card's short fiction written prior to 1990. Card is a bestselling science fiction and fantasy writer who has been publishing short stories and essays since 1977, when he won the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. This volume has 46 stories and is en-hanced with essays and memoirs. The book includes twelve works which rarely appear elsewhere. These are stories which have been superceded by later versions. Included here are the story 'Mikal's Songbird,' which grew into the novel Songmaster; the novella length 'Ender's Game', which became the award-winning novel of the same name; and the epic poem 'Prentice Alvin and the No-Good Plow,' which was the seed for Card's ac-claimed Tales of Alvin Maker series.

Orson Scott Card is the author of the novels Ender's Game, Ender's Shadow, and Speaker for the Dead, which are widely read by adults and younger readers, and are increasingly used in schools. Besides these and other science fiction novels, Card writes contemporary fantasy (Magic Street, Enchantment, Lost Boys), biblical novels (Stone Tables, Rachel and Leah), the American frontier fantasy series The Tales of Alvin Maker (beginning with Seventh Son), poetry (An Open Book), and many plays and scripts. Card was born in Washington and grew up in California, Arizona, and Utah. He served a mission for the LDS Church in Brazil in the early 1970s. Besides his writing, he teaches occasional classes and workshops and directs plays. He recently began a long-term position as a professor of writing and literature at Southern Virginia University.
