The six chapters which make up the present volume were delivered as a series of broadcasts over theB ritish Broadcasting Corporation. They were simultaneously published in the official journal of the B.B.C., The Listener (L ondon) in the six weekly issues beginning on 7J anuary 1931 and terminating with the issue of 11 February 1931. The talks are reprinted here for the first time. Two words which in their English context are quite inoffensive have been changed to their acceptable American forms. One of the same words has been dropped because of redundancy. These changes were made in chapter four. For the rest, the chapters stand exactly as they were printed inT heL istener, to which journal thanks are due for having made them available. The text is reprinted here through the courtesy of the editor ofT heL istener and theB ritish Broadcasting Corporation.
