The first volume of the long-awaited revised edition of the popular Practical Chinese Reader series are finally available! This completely new edition (it will encompass six volumes in 70 lessons when completed) takes the student from an absolute beginner to an intermediate level, approximately 3 years of higher-level classroom instruction. The text follows the story of Ding Libo (the son of Gubo and Ding Yun from the first edition) and other international students as they live in China, learning about Chinese culture and society as they learn contemporary Mandarin. Emphasizing the basic skills of reading, writing (simplified characters), speaking, and listening, with supplementary exercises, many illustrations, charts, and in a larger 8 x 11 format.

It consists of seventy lessons in s'ix volumes, covering beginning to intermediate levels, for three years of instruction. It has been compiled under the guidance of the new NOTCFL Syllabus and in consultation with the HSK Guicleline. The objective of this series is to develop the student's ability to communicate using Chinese through the study of language structure, language function, and related cultural knowledge along with the training of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

Since New Practical Chinese Reader was published in 2002, it has been well received by teachers and learners of Chinese around the world. For users convenience, in this new edition, we have revised those we found improper, but have not revised the framework, the texts and the main language points of the textbook. In contrast to its first edition, the explanations of the text are designed next to each text to facilitate students. Users can download the traditional Chinese version of the texts for free. All the reading materials and illustrations in the accompanying workbook are updated.
New Practical Chinese Reader (2nd Edition) Textbook 3, with altogether 12 lessons, tells interesting stories about the life of several foreign students and their friendship with their Chinese friends and teachers. It also introduces the customs and culture integrating daily life.
