Nel bled vengono rinchiusi coloro che, arruolatisi nella Legione Straniera, si sono macchiati di qualche colpa e devono quindi espiarla. E' un luogo terribile, senza leggi tranne quelle dei carcerieri. Nel bled si vengono a trovare anche Michele Cernazè, un ungherese, e il suo amico Enrico. Il primo ha incontrato, durante una caccia, la bella araba Afza, soprannominata il "Raggio dell'Atlante", e se ne è guadagnato l'ammirazione, la gratitudine e poi l'amore per averla salvata dall'attacco di un leone. Ma questo amore desta la gelosia di uno dei suoi carcerieri, che è deciso a far sparire il suo rivale...
