My mother would get ready for work in the basement. She had a black and white television. The black and white TV only had three stations. It had an antenna… these little metal bars sticking out from the top of it. There was a knob you’d turn to find stations. The black and white TV played soap operas. Even though my mother worked at a factory, she had a union that protected us. It was a respectable job. She wore makeup, tried looking her best. My mother would often complain that Susan Lucci never won an Emmy, that Ms. Lucci was passed up for one many times, that they wouldn’t give it to her, that she deserved it.
