"When Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes." (Matthew 7:28) When the scribes taught, you could take it or leave it. Same goes for much preaching today. But when Jesus taught, they were gobsmacked. What would happen if pulpits today were filled with men who preached less like the scribes and more like the Lord? By studying Christ’s words in His most famous sermon, pastors can see the true spiritual authority they should aim to reflect and all Christians can learn to discern whether they can hear it in their churches.
