„De ce am decis sa public aceasta carte? Pentru ca imi fac iluzia ca nu eu sunt prezent in paginile ei. Prezent e un ins care, intre 19 si 60 de ani, a traversat (si traverseaza inca) un episod de Bildung, adica de instructie si formare. In definitiv, ceea ce ofer este istoria fragmentara a unui auto-didact. Ea poate interesa, cred, o categorie de cititori (mai ales tineri) aflati in cautarea unui drum, a unui orizont de interogatie si de lectura care se alcatuieste, in fond, de la sine, prin intalniri modelatoare, curiozitati, obsesii, sanse si nesanse existentiale, candori si eschive, oportunitati provocatoare, surprize si inertii. Dincolo de vremuri, mai mult sau mai putin apasatoare, dincolo de accidente si precaritati autobiografice, dincolo de limitele si derapajele personale, un asemenea drum este posibil si merita asumat. Asta e tot. Nu vreau sa demonstrez, prin paginile care urmeaza, nimic altceva. Nu ma propun ca model, ci ca studiu de caz. M-as bucura, fireste, ca cititorul sa dea, din cand in cand, si peste vreun gand stimulator sau peste vreo formulare sa cada pe ganduri, sau sa se amuze. Dar rostul textului e, primordial, unul al insotirii amicale, al unei sugestii de traseu spiritual in durftiger Zeit, adica in vremuri de cumpana, cum sunt, de fapt, toate vremurile. Ma expun, ca sa ma alatur tinerilor (dar si celor mai putin tineri) care se simt inca nesiguri de ei, inca tatonanti, orgoliosi, dar timizi, harnici si lenesi deopotriva. Le propun, ca tema de reflectie, propriile mele ambitii, neputinte, experiente si sperante. si cate ceva din lucrurile care mi-au iesit in cale, de-a lungul a patruzeci de ani de itineranta.“ (Andrei PLEsU)

Andrei Gabriel Pleșu is a Romanian philosopher, essayist, journalist, literary and art critic. He has been intermittently involved in politics assuming the roles of Minister of Culture (1989-91), Minister of Foreign Affairs (1997-99) and presidential counsellor for external affairs (2004-05). He studied art history at the University of Bucharest and graduated with his bachelor's in 1971. Between 1971 and 1989 he had various jobs like researcher at the Institute of Art History, an institution of Romanian Academy, faculty lecturer in University of Bucharest and consultant for Romanian Artists Union. After the Romanian Revolution of 1989 that overturned the Communist regime, he was one of the founders of "New Europe College" an institute of advanced studies, and of the cultural magazine "Dilema" (now "Dilema Veche"). He worked as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest and is now a professor at the University of Bucharest, where he teaches art history and philosophy of religion. He also became involved in politics, serving in various official functions. Pleşu's early works revolved around art history and theory, but, in time, his essays, published in cultural magazines and elsewhere, became oriented towards cultural anthropology and philosophy. His exuberant writing style gained him recognition as one of the leading Romanian essayists of his age. Source: Wikipedia.
