„Ceea ce incerc sa fac este un fel de arheologie a vietii de zi cu zi a Uniunii Sovietice, ca o metafora a culturii si civilizatiei sovietice. Textul, scris in maniera unui «gen eretic», incearca sa sintetizeze teme, eroi, situatii, amintiri, lucruri si cuvinte-cheie sub forma unor piese de puzzle. Desi fiecare piesa-text poate fi citita separat, intregul nu poate fi vazut decit montind piesa cu piesa. Acest ansamblu nu are pretentia de a construi o imagine exhaustiva, obiectiva si exacta a ceea ce a fost cultura sovietica. Este o arheologie subiectiva, personala care vrea sa dea doar contururi, starea de spirit, modul de a gindi si de a vorbi al unei culturi, sa creioneze mentalitatea culturala sovietica. Aceasta arheologie nu propune o cheie de intelegere, o judecata morala sau valorica, ci doar induce o familiarizare care ne poate ajuta pe toti sa intelegem mai bine ce a fost Uniunea Sovietica si ce inseamna lipsa ei.” (Vasile Ernu)

Vasile Ernu (born 1971 in the USSR) graduated at the Faculty of Philosophy in Iasi (Al. I. Cuza University, Iasi, Romania) and has a master's degree in philosophy (Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj, Romania). He was one of the founding editors of Philosophy&Stuff magazine and associated editor of Idea arta+societate magazine. He published his first book, Born in the USSR, in 2006, which was translated into Russian and in Bulgarian. The book was nominated for prizes such as: the Prize for debut of the Cuvîntul magazine, the Prize for Fiction and Memoirism Observator Cultural, or for Opera Prima of the Anonimul Foundation. The volume was distinguished with the Prize for debut of România Literara magazine and the Prize for debut of the Union of the Writers in Romania. His second book The Last Heretics of the Empire was published by Polirom Publishing House in 2009.
