Książka O maskach, lustrach i demonach jest panoramą nowelistyki francuskiej z lat 1880-1900. Przedstawione w niej opowiadania łączy atmosfera paryskiego fin-de siècle’u, w której działają demoniczne kobiety, manekiny, widma, postaci queer, sukuby i inne niesamowite figury. Kilkunastu autorów (wśród nich Jean Lorrain i Marcel Schwob) reprezentuje różne kierunki i stylistyki - są tu esteci, realiści, satyrycy oraz pisarze zaangażowani społecznie. Utwory przedstawione w tomie nie były nigdy publikowane w Polsce w formie książkowej, zaledwie kilka ukazało się w czasopismach.

Marcel Schwob (1867-1905) was one of the key symbolist writers, standing in French literature alongside such names as Stephane Mallarme, Octave Mirbeau, Andre Gide, Leon Bloy, Jules Renard, Remy de Gourmont, and Alfred Jarry. His best-known works are Double Heart (1891), The King In The Gold Mask (1892), and Imaginary Lives (1896).

Jean Lorrain, born Paul Duval, was a French poet and novelist of the Symbolist school. Lorrain was a dedicated disciple of dandyism, and openly gay. Lorrain wrote a number of collections of verse, including La forêt bleue (1883) and L'ombre ardente, (1897). He is also remembered for his decadent novels and short stories, such as Monsieur de Phocas (1901) and Histoires des masques (1900), as well as for one of his best novels, Sonyeuse, which he links to portraits exhibited by Antonio de La Gandara in 1893.
