The chorus girls of which Sir Herbert was so fond? Girls from the building’s staff with whom he had taken liberties? Or the two middle-aged women who had been feuding for twenty years, one of whom was the aunt to his nephew and heir? #5
The Luminous Face
1921
The death of Robert Gleason, a wealthy businessman from Seattle, at first looked like a suicide. He had called his doctor saying that he was shot, and when the doctor arrived at his New York apartment, the door was locked. After breaking down the door, his body was found lying on the floor, a revolver at his side. Yet certain facts argued against a verdict of suicide. Gleason had been shot twice, once shot to the temple, which killed him instantly, and a second shot, after he was dead, to the shoulder. How could he have made a phone call after he was already dead? A web of conflicting clues and dubious alibis baffle the police until detective Pennington Wise and his mysterious assistant Zizi are called in to solve the case.

The Affair at Flower Acres
1923
Malcolm Finley has been invited by Douglas Raynor to visit his beautiful country estate, the aptly-named Flower Acres. Also staying at the house are Raynor's wife Nancy, Nancy's brother Orville, Raynor's spinster sister Mattie and a dietitian named Eva Turner. But why has Nancy married this older man who so obviously mistreats her? And why has the habitually jealous Raynor invited Finley to stay, knowing full well that Nancy and he were once lovers? Soon, however, these questions are superseded by an altogether more pressing one - namely, who fired the single shot that ended Douglas Raynor's life?
With seemingly every member of the household lying in order to protect one another, the local police are unable to get very far in their investigation and it is left to celebrated detective Pennington Wise to clear up the mystery of Raynor's death.
