Written in 1945 by Indonesian independence leader Sutan Sjahrir, Our Struggle (later translated and expanded on as Out of Exile) was pivotal in redirecting the Indonesian national revolution. Sjahrir addresses all crucial spearheads of the ongoing revolutionary struggle for Indonesia's independence. His writings successfully countered the myth that the Indonesian republic was the brainchild of the fascist imperial Japanese forces and not a deep national desire. The 1946 Dutch-language editions contain opening words by Perhimpoenan Indonesia and were used to sway Dutch public opinion during the Linggadjati negotiations. The English translation was distributed at Westminster Hall to the British delegates to the United Nations. After writing Our Struggle, Sjahrir was appointed Prime Minister by President Sukarno in November 1945 and served until June 1947.
