IT WAS LIKE A NIGHTMARE... Anna was alone in the cellar of Adams House, moving through the darkness with only a candle to light her way. A man appeared from the shadows, blocking her path. His skull-like face was pale, the skin taut over his cheekbones. He stretched out a hand, emaciated as a claw, and Anna screamed. The man seized her and, grinning maniacally, hissed, "There are phantoms! No one can help you!" Anna pulled free and ran through the gloom, suddenly coming upon a familiar veiled figure. "Who are you?" she cried. "What do you want with me?" The ghostly creature made no reply, but reached up to lift the veil from its face. It was Laura Adams, the late wife of the man Anna loved—a woman who had died a horrible death months before!
