In the 14th century, Prague was the seat of Emperor Charles IV and the political powerhouse of Central Europe. In the 16th century, Prague was the cultural capital of Europe under the rule of Emperor Rudolf II. The twentieth century saw Czechs fall first under Nazi occupation and then under the Soviet rule. It was not until 1989 when the Czechs were able to live in freedom again. Yet, Prague and the Czech Republic still remain somewhat of an enigma to many.
