Al passato ci si può volgere sotto una duplice spinta: disseppellire i morti e togliere la rena e l'erba che coprono corti e palagi; ricostruire, per compiacercene o dolercene, il percorso che ci ha condotto a ciò che oggi siamo, illustrandone le difficoltà, gli ostacoli, gli sviamenti, ma anche i successi. Appare ovvio che nella storia contemporanea prevalga la seconda motivazione; ma anche la prima vi ha una sua parte.
