Fascinating, engrossing biography of Sweden's Queen Christina, one of the most enigmatic & paradoxical women in history. She would have preferred to be a man, and went to great lengths to behave like one, her dress, her langauge, her deportment were all masculine. She also aspired to be a scholar and dazzled Europe's intellectuals with her linguistic gifts, her passion for the classic philosophers, and her intense interest in all the advanced scholarship of the day. Ascending the throne in 1632 of an intense Protestant Swenden, she shocked the world with her conversion to the Catholic faith. She schemed fruitlessly to become the Queen of Poland and later Naples. She played a cat & mouse game with chancelleries of Spain, England, France and the Holy See, driving them all wild trying to interpret her true intentions. She scandalized Europe with her unbiddled, embarrassing love affair with the elegant Cardinal Azzolino. A very original, wild-spirited ruler, whose life was unique right up to the end. Well-worth the read.
