Viktor Astafiev’s Queen Fish: A Story in Two Parts and Twelve Episodes was first published in the USSR in 1976. It is a collection of loosely connected narratives set on and around the river Yenisei in Siberia. The work’s depiction of the oneness of man and nature, and humankind’s responsibility for its abuse of nature has earned it the reputation of being the author’s natural philosophical manifesto.
