When Deadeye, a hotshot space jockey, is captured by pirates, he decides to join the motley group called the Redshift Runners. Maybe they can help him get rich. These Runners aren’t typical interstellar bandits, however. They risk their lives delivering food and supplies to starving colonies in the outer rim. Deadeye gains the favor of their captain, Talon, a driven woman whose schemes will lead them to the ancient boundary separating the colonies from mythical Earth—and guarded by Parallax, a mysterious effect that renders the area unnavigable. Yet the cost of traveling the stars exacts a heavy toll. Due to the mental link with their ships, jockeys gradually lose their memories…and Deadeye risks forgetting everything to satisfy Talon’s ambitions.

After deactivating Parallax and restoring access to Earth, Deadeye and the Redshift Runners have become the most infamous pirates in the Orion Spur. Yet the old order has its hands full with Dying Suns, a political movement calling for a return to Earth—while leaving the barren, ‘dying’ worlds they were forced to colonize. Miners, farmers, and other settlers petition the Runners to fly them to humanity’s birthplace. This upsets corporations and nobles who profited from such exploitation, and Deadeye undertakes the deadliest missions he’s ever flown to save the frustrated masses. But Talon, his beloved captain, has her own vendetta against the nobles, and Deadeye must face his past—and hers—if they are to survive.
