‘Jom’ was the name Mom gave me, expecting that it could be changed according to the mood each year. In a good mood, it could be Jom, the naughty. In a bad mood, it could be Jom the nosy. The reason was that I was born with a gift that allows me to hear others' minds and see the picture in their heads when I touch them. Dad and Mom took advantage of my ability for gambling, or sometimes, as a stitch in time saves nine, screening tenants’ profiles in our apartment. Until one day ‘Renu,’ the new tenant came up, and Mom asked me to screen her profile. Yet, I saw nothing. I couldn't read her mind but only heard the echo of her heartbeat. Ba-dum… Constantly. As I was always the person who didn’t want to know others’ stories, I ended up wanting to know everything about her, which made me crazy. Moreover, the new tenant was also an educator, ‘The new teacher in my school.’ What started as a simple relationship developed into something complex when her heartbeat and mine started to race at the same pace. Then, I thought of some experiments about couples’ heartbeats that beat at the same pace. The person who I had so many questions filed in my head every time I met her. Who is she? Why can't I hear a thing…except the sound of her heart.
