About 50,000 children and young people in the UK are caregivers. Some are as young as five years old. They are entrusted to care for members of their families in varying degrees; from helping with the shopping and household chores, to total care; often entirely alone, without help from anyone. Until recently, these children were a largely hidden section of society; neglected, bullied, offered little or no support from teachers, and all too often ignored by GP’s and Health Care teams. This is the story of 15-year-old Claire Bishop: a caregiver for her elderly mother; torn between her sense of duty and her desire for a “normal” adolescence. For those unfamiliar with such a dilemma, hers is an inspirational tale that offers a rare insight into the life of a young girl forced to mature, before even growing up. And for all those faced with similar situations, it serves as an all too seldom reminder: you are not alone.
