Charity Bryant needed to escape New York and the life she was forced into by circumstance and death. Her cousin and best friend, Clara May lived an entitled life after losing both parents at a young age and coming by a substantial inheritance. She had taken Clara May into her confidence about her plans to travel West to Texas to take up a proposal of marriage from the rancher, Alsop. Clara May would hear none of it, though unless she went along to make sure the match was good enough and that Charity was in no potential danger. Alsop lived with his widower brother, Edrick on a successful ranch near the Texan town of River Creek.
