He returned to Oxford for his graduate studies, earning his doctoral degree (D.Phil.) in 1991. Professor Thomas began his academic career in 1992 at the University of the West of England (Bristol). In 2003 he accepted a post in the history department of the University of Exeter. He is also the director of the Centre for the Study of War, State and Society. Professor Thomas is considered one of the leading academic specialists on French colonial history, colonial intelligence & security services, and the history of decolonisation.

George Hamilton Teed was a Canadian author who also wrote under the pen-names G. H. Teed, Hamilton Teed, Peter Kingsland, Louis Brittany, and Desmond Reid. Teed was born in Woodstock, New Brunswick. He specialized in adventure fiction and detective stories, but also wrote a few science fiction tales and romances. He penned over 400 tales during his 25 year career. He is best remembered for his tales featuring detective Sexton Blake but he also wrote several stories starring detectives Nelson Lee and Dixon Hawke. His legacy includes redefining how the female master criminal was portrayed in detective fiction.
