When you've been through as much as Aspen has in her short amount of time on earth, it's hard to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Growing up in the system has never been more corrupt when Aspen is pitted against obstacles in which she has to overcome. Until she turns 15, and her innocence is ripped away from her just like that in every sense of the word. Now she's only a shell of the person she used to be.
