Jacob is chasing a fugitive who has fled to Nebraska. When he arrives in Canaan, a town settled by former slaves seeking freedom and land of their own, he learns that they are under siege from a local rancher who wants to take their land from them. In keeping with his vow to fight evil wherever he finds it, he offers to help them defend their town, setting in motion a confrontation with one of the most pernicious evils, the evil of greed and wealth that looks down upon those considered inferior. The people of Canaan are peace-loving, with no experience in war or fighting, so Jacob has his work cut out for him. But for Jacob Blade, the harder the job, the harder he fights.
