LUFTWAFFE IN ACTION is a new concept. Between the covers of this book can be found some of the finest German wartime photographs ever taken. There is no text to speak of, since we feel there are enough publications available describing the aircraft in detail, but lacking the photo coverage that the discriminating collector and model builder is seeking. Each of the photos is unique in the sense that only operational aircraft are whown. These are not manufacturer's publicity photographs that have been seen time after time, but propaganda shots originally meant to be published in German wartime publications. At least 90 percent of the pictures in this book have never been published before and it is our hope that you, the reader, will enjoy them for what they are.

F-104 Starfighter in Action

1984

In the tradition of the "In Action Series" these titles provide outstanding photographic coverage over a wide range of aircraft types. Images are drawn from many private collections and archives to depict the title feature in its historical surroundings. In addition, each volume features original cover art, full color profiles, detailed scale drawings, scrap art and essential descriptive text to bring these histories to life. This book tells the story of the the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter which was a single-engine, high-performance, supersonic interceptor aircraft originally developed for the United States Air Force by Lockheed at their famous Skunk Works. One of the Century Series of aircraft, it served with the USAF from 1958 until 1969, and continued with Air National Guard units until it was phased out in 1975. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) flew a small mixed fleet of F-104 types in supersonic flight tests and spaceflight programs until they were retired

Issued on 15 February 1934, the request by the new Reichsluftfahrtsministerium (RLM/Air Ministry) for a single-seat daytime air combat fighter with a top speed of 400 km/h, brought a new lease of life to the financially strapped Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (BFW). BFW began work on the plane, its first military aircraft, that December, and in May 1935 the Bf 109 V1 prototype took to the air - 10 months before the flight of the first Spitfire - launching the career of an iconic fighter plane whose numerous versions would serve the Reich until the end of the Second World War.

The Douglas SBD Dauntless, the Slow But Deadly Dauntless, was easily the most famous bomber of World War II, and possibly the most important dive bomber flown by any combatant during World War II. The Dauntless was already considered obsolete even before the United States entered the war. Obsolescence not with standing, The Dauntless sunk more enemy shipping during 1942 than all other aircraft combined and destroyed the cream of the Japanese aircraft carrier fleet during the Battle of Midway, a blow from which the Japanese Navy never recovered.

Sopwith Fighters in Action

1991

It could be argued that the aircraft built at Thomas Sopwith's factory at Kingston-on-Thames contributed more to the Allied cause during the First World War than those of any other aircraft company. Of these, the Sopwith Camel is the best remembered. These aircraft made a great contribution to the development of the aircraft as a fighting machine at a time when the very science of flying was in its early stages - the world's first controlled flight having been made by the Wright brothers only some thirteen years before the first Sopwith Pup took to the air, The single seat Pup was to be the predecessor of a whole range of single seat fighters which were to continue as far as the limits of the rotary engine permitted.

#1143

MiG-19 Farmer in Action - Aircraft No. 143

1994

MiG Design Bureau first shocked the world with the infamous MiG-15 during the Korean War. The Soviets continued development of this concept with the MiG-17 and then the first Soviet supersonic plane, the MiG-19. "Farmer" is the NATO code word used for this plane. Not as many MiG-19's were built as the MiG-15, but this was a very capable and dangerous opponent. Fast, maneuverable, easy to manufacture, this plane gave US pilots a tough time during the Vietnam War and the Israelis in 1967/73 Wars. This is another in the fine series of "In Action" books, Squadron Signal format is to provide the readers with a bit of narrative, plenty of clear black and white photos, and many line drawings to show each version of this fighter. 2 pages of color plates help the modelers see the different paint schemes used. This book is perfect for modelers or those who are interested in an introduction to Soviet aviation history. Yefim Gorden wrote the definative book on the Mig-19, but it more expensive. I highly recommend this book, I have read it and referenced it many times.

B-26 Marauder in action - Aircraft No. 210

2008

Updated and packed with 20 new pages. Probably no other aircraft type in the inventory of the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) can rival the reputation of the Martin B-26 Marauder. The B-26, nicknamed Flak Bait, was the only US bomber to accomplish more than 200 missions during WWII. More than 60 percent of the Marauders that started bombing operations from English bases during the summer of 1943 were still operational a year later. A total of 129,943 Marauder sorties over Europe were recorded by the USAAF at the cost of 911 B-26s lost in combat. The Marauders belonging to the 9th and 12th Air Force dropped a total of 169,382 tons of bombs, mainly on tactical targets, such as bridges, enemy strong points, and marshaling yards, but also on V1 flying bomb sites in northern France. Between November 1940 and March 1945, a total of 5,266 B-26s were built. Many senior pilots of the 22nd Bomb Group in Australia, the outfit that pioneered the Marauder, recalled the B-26 as "the best damn airplane the Air Force ever had." There is nothing more to add.

Me 262 in Action

2008

The Messerschmitt Me 262 became the first operational jet fighter in the world. In addition to its Jumo 004 turbojet powerplants, its swept wings were a further innovation that made the Me 262 one of the most extraordinary designs of World War II. The Me 262 A-1a achieved the incredible speed for its time of 497 mph - almost 125 mph faster than the North American P-51 Mustang. The Me 262 not only enjoyed superior speed, but it also had deadly a total of (4) Mk.108 30 mm cannon were mounted in the nose of the fighter variant. Its operational service, however, was hampered by its temperamental engines and under-strength undercarriage. A total of 1,433 Me 262s were built during World War II. Covers the production and development of the Me 262 with more than 100 photographs, color profiles, and detailed line drawings. 52 pages.

C-141 Starlifter In Action Aircraft Color Series No. 215

2009

During its long, active life with the military, the C-141 Starlifter has carried troops and equipment in the Vietnam War, Operation Urgent Fury in Granada, Operation Just Cause in Panama, Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operations in Afghanistan. Despite the Starlifter's long history, the struggle to acquire what would become the C-141 was a long story in itself. Thanks to the fight Lt General William Tunner, the Military Air Transport Service's commander from 1958 to 1960, waged to obtain an aircraft dedicated to carrying cargo and troops, the Starlifter did come to fruition. The first C-141 rolled out of the Lockheed Plant in Georgia on 22 August 1963 to much fanfare. From there, in war and peace, the C-141's story has been lifted to the stars of aviation history. Illustrated with over 150 color and 8 b/w photographs, 3-view drawing, 3-scheme color camouflage art, and color profiles. 58 pages.

U.S. Navy UAVs in Action - Aircraft No. 217

2010

The development of unmanned aerial vehicles actually predates the development of piloted aircraft. Although manned aircraft more than overtook the unmanned variety in importance throughout the 20th Century, unmanned aerial vehicles or UAVs are now poised to become a key component of 21st Century air warfare. UAV evolved extensively and saw extensive action during Operation Desert Storm - the war against Iraq in 1991 - and since then the floodgates have been opened. The US Navy sees two main advantages in using UAVs - endurance and cost effectiveness. UAVs can stay aloft 2 or 3 days and ground operators can be rotated on a regular schedule; they also use less fuel thus reducing operating costs. Newer roles, such as bombing, are also being considered for UAVs, some of which will be equipped to carry a weapon pod or bomb rack, a valuable attribute over high-risk battlegrounds. Illustrated with 170 photographs, plus color profiles and detailed line drawings.

A-10 Warthog In Action

2010

The A-10 Warthog, a twin engine US Air Force ground attack jet, was designed and built from the wheels up for the sole purpose of supporting ground forces. Outwardly ugly and ungainly, the A-10 is one of the most efficient aerial killers ever to take to the sky. Sheathed in 900 pounds of titanium armor, the Warthog - whose official name is the Thunderbolt II - can survive direct hits from armor-piercing and high-explosive projectiles as large as 23mm. It has triple redundancy in its flight control systems, allowing pilots to fly and land when hydraulic power is out or part of a wing has been shot off. Introduced in the mid-1970s, the A-10 has seen service in the Gulf War of 1990-1991; in the Balkans, later in the 1990s; in Afghanistan after 2001; and in the occupation of Iraq, beginning in the spring of 2003. Illustrated with more than 106 photographs, 11 full color paintings, 43 detail drawings and 2 pages of 3-view drawings. 56 pages.

B-17 Flying Fortress in Action

2010

The B-17 Flying Fortress dropped more bombs than any other US aircraft in WWII and is arguably the iconic bomber of that epic conflict. During the 10 years in which it was produced, a total of 12,731 of the B-17 heavy bombers rolled off the assembly lines of Boeing, Douglas Aircraft, and Lockheed’s subsidiary Vega. First flown in 1935, the aircraft was repeatedly modified, upgraded, and perfected in response to combat experience. Also highlights the roles played by individual aircraft and their crews, including Memphis Belle, which completed 25 missions over enemy territory; Stage Door Canteen, christened by Winston Churchill’s daughter; and All American, which demonstrated the incredible toughness of the Flying Fortress by returning safely to base despite having its tail nearly sheared off by a Messerschmitt.

B-25 Mitchell in Action - Aircraft No. 221

2011

The North American B-25 Mitchell was one of the premier US warplanes of WWII. It gained immortality early in the US involvement in the war when a small group of B-25Bs under Lt Col. Jimmy Doolittle took off from the deck of the USS Hornet and executed a surprise attack on military targets on the Japanese island of Honshu. Subsequently, Mitchells saw service in every theater of war, doing duty as tactical bombers, coastal patrol aircraft, photo-reconnaissance and photo-mapping planes, and, when fitted with additional guns and rockets, superb ground- and shipping-attack platforms. The US supplied B-25s to the British Royal Air Force and to the Soviet Union, which flew them against the Nazis on the Eastern Front. The career of the Mitchell is covered from the experimental NA-40 prototype to the final production B-25J model. US Marine Corps PBJ versions are also chronicled. Eight all-new pages of photos and information fill out this latest edition.
