Lo scrittore francese Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) scrisse in tutta la sua vita 243 favole, che sono diventate un capolavoro della letteratura francese di tutti i tempi. In questo volume si raccolgono le 124 favole che La Fontaine pubblicò nell’anno 1668 con il titolo Les fables. Undici anni dopo, nel 1679, sarebbe uscita una seconda parte, che sarà pubblicata in un secondo volume all’interno di questa meravigliosa collana. Le storie geniali di La Fontaine sono qui accompagnate dalle illustrazioni originali con le quali l’artista francese Benjamin Rabier illustrò il volume Fables de La Fontaine, pubblicato nel 1906 dalla prestigiosa casa editrice parigina di Jules Tallandier.

Jean de La Fontaine was the most famous French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. According to Flaubert, he was the only French poet to understand and master the texture of the French language before Hugo. A set of postage stamps celebrating La Fontaine and the Fables was issued by France in 1995. A film of his life was released in France in April 2007 (Jean de La Fontaine - le défi starring Laurent Deutsch).
