Charles is shocked to find his old friend, Colonel Markland sitting in a bar in San Francisco when Charles is there introduction two brothers and their families to the farm that he built. Colonel Markland advises Charles that an assassin has been hired to kill him and President Grant has ordered Colonel Markland to find and kill this assassin. Trouble explodes when Charles begins finding his employees murdered, and he rushes to the farm to make sure his new tenants are safe and finds the assassin there. Charles and Judith attend Sun Bird’s graduation, and Charles invites Sun Bird and her husband, Lt. Colonel Brett Haire to come to Philadelphia for some time off after Charles finds out Brett has been given a six-week furlough. Charles wants Brett to quit the Army and join the Crawford team, and Charles offers Brett the east coast management position of Crawford Foods and Crawford Hotels. With six weeks leave coming to him, Brett and Sun Bird are convinced to travel with Charles to see what he is offering. During the visit, Brett confides in Charles his actual reason for considering retirement from the Army.
