「無頼派」「新戯作派」の破滅型作家を代表する昭和初期の小説家、太宰治の短編小説。初出は「改造」[1942(昭和17)年]。菊池寛の「忠直卿行状記」から、自殺した静子夫人を連想した「僕」が、静子の師匠であった中泉画伯のもとに残された水彩画を見に行くという話。自己の真価を確認しようとしてもないえず、煩悶を深くしていく悲劇が描かれている。
