Jean-Luc Nancy si interroga sulle modalità di vivere l’amore in un mondo in cui il desiderio sembra mutarsi in obbligo igienico e risorsa commerciale. Inquietudine e irritazione non sono risposte adeguate, sostiene il filosofo: è opportuno riflettere su come la nostra eredità dell’amore sia composta da due patrimoni, quello antico e quello cristiano, che non sono omogenei e che anzi spesso si contraddicono l’un l’altro. Una simile prospettiva di divenire temporale è la sola che può consentirci di comprendere le deformazioni e i limiti delle nostre rappresentazioni dell’amore e di inventare nuove forme per questo sentimento.
