Nascent Shadow

2017

Brooklyn Amari knew not to get in a car with a stranger. When a man tried to lure her—she killed him. As if taking a life at the tender age of ten wasn’t bad enough, her childhood home burned to the ground two years later. She doesn’t remember how she survived, but she’s felt a pull toward the conflagration ever since. After a troubled patch in her teens, she’s become a respectable firefighter, rushing again and again into the inferno that almost killed her. A routine sweep-and-clear during a hotel blaze takes a deadly turn, but also explains how she escaped death eleven years ago: she’s probably a demon. Brooklyn had always enjoyed having psychic abilities, but wings? She’s still trying to come to terms with what she might be when she experiences a vision of an arsonist planting an enchanted bomb, but the Fire Marshal’s office is ill-equipped to handle magic. Since she’s the most paranormal thing they’ve got, they offer her a temporary promotion. Unfortunately, she soon finds herself neck-deep in an investigation that goes straight over her head. And oh yeah—she’s supposed to destroy the world.

The Shadow Collector

2017

Brooklyn thought nothing would ever surprise her again after learning her father is an extraplanar being―until the police ask her for help. For most of her life, the cops have been a thorn in her side, always in the way of a good time. By seventeen, she’d spent more time in police cars than some rookies. With age comes (a little) restraint, and she’s managed to avoid getting in trouble for six whole years. Working for the Philadelphia Fire Department offers a sense of belonging and purpose she never had growing up, even if the whole ‘adulting’ thing sucks. After responding to a fire call eerily similar to the one that claimed her childhood home, a local detective seeks her out. He’s hunting a serial killer who preys on the city’s homeless, taking the lives of those no one cares to see. Every victim’s body has so far been stolen from the morgue, frustrating the investigation to the point he’s willing to rely on a psychic―even a former delinquent. Brooklyn senses a connection between the recent fire, the murders, and a mysteriously guilty little girl, but her respect for the law only goes so far.

The Gate to Oblivion

2018

Brooklyn Amari doesn’t ask for much, only the ability to make it through life without destroying the universe. Working as a firefighter is her true calling, satisfying her deep, primal draw to the flames. Immunity to burning courtesy of her half-extraplanar ancestry makes her the city’s best weapon against disaster of the incendiary kind—not that anyone knows about it. She’s trying to keep her nature a secret, since magical creatures aren’t allowed inside major population centers… and most people probably wouldn’t react well to a demon. Even a half-demon. Since her psychic abilities are out of the bag, the Arson Investigation Unit calls on her for all the ‘weird ones’ no one else wants to touch. When they can’t explain an apparent case of spontaneous human combustion, they bring her in to track a deadly arcane arsonist. She’s happy to help, but unfortunately, some not-quite-angels abduct someone she cares for. They need Brooklyn to destroy the mortal world as it’s in the way of their interdimensional war—but even if she does what they want, everyone she loves will die.

The Queen of Discord

2020

Brooklyn Amari exists to destroy the world—but she doesn’t want to. It’s not every day a person finds out their father is an ancient demon, two powerful armies expect her to end creation, and everything people think about celestial beings is completely wrong. Such news would break most people. Fortunately, Brooklyn’s tough. She’s also kinda lazy, which works, since saving the world requires she do nothing at all. Good chance her life has gone off the rails when giant lightning-spitting birds are the least of her problems. Her friend is in deadly trouble with a gang and the warmongers hatch a devious new plan to destroy the Armistice—a.k.a the world—without her. Sitting on her ass ignoring everything won’t cut it anymore. Worse, she can’t stop thinking about the eco-terrorist mage attacking industrial sites across the country. Chasing people down is totally not in her job description as a firefighter, but such a strong psychic fixation is a big red flag. If Brooklyn’s limp excuse for a conscience doesn’t wake up, something bad is going to happen… probably to a bunch of innocent people who don’t deserve it.

The Burning Alchemist

2020

Brooklyn Amari is so excited to have a kid, she’s beside herself—literally. The six-year-old isn’t her daughter, but a copy of her in all ways except age. Despite a seventeen-year age gap, being around Pandora makes her feel like a kid again, which means mischief. Who has time to destroy all of creation when there are pranks to play? Brooklyn inherited powers some might call demonic from her father, but also epic laziness. From her mother, she came down with a severe case of conscience. While she tries to do the right thing, having little respect for the law and weak impulse control sometimes results in destructive shortcuts, blood, and screaming. Lawrence again asks for her help investigating a fire. Upon learning eighteen people died, Mom’s gift of morality cramps her desire to laze around having fun. Once a psychic hit reveals how twisted the arsonist is, Brooklyn fully commits to hunting him down. Problem he knows she’s coming… and her friends aren’t fireproof.

The Pacifist's Doom

2023

A desperate stranger dumping a dangerous magical weapon in Brooklyn’s lap isn’t the end of the world—it’s merely going to kill every living thing on the planet. The world itself will be just fine. This isn’t the kind of apocalypse she signed up for. Her idea of saving the world is much less do nothing at all. If she doesn’t destroy it, that counts as saving it, right? Alas, the ancient artifact isn’t very patient. The clock is ticking and it’s going to make her miss some serious couch time. Problem is, the doomsday device doesn’t want to be stopped. It keeps slipping away from her. Even if she does manage to get her hands on it, the Philadelphia Fire Department hasn’t exactly trained her how to disarm ancient magical weapons of mass destruction. She’s going to have to improvise. What could possibly go wrong?
