These spectacular photographs offer a pictorial record without equal of the Civil War. In Nearly 2,000 extraordinary and often rare images, accompanied by illuminating essays by many of the foremost historians of the Civil War, the action is presented as it really happened and as it was actually recorded by the camera. The result offers an intensely moving portrait of an America divided more than a century ago, capturing the mercurial moods, the valor, the squalor, of two nations and on people locked in fratricidal war.
