Colonel Middleton is preparing to leave the service and India when he receives a summons to call on a fellow Englishman. The despicable Sir John is dying. While the latter—rightly—considers the colonel a fool, he also knows he can trust no one else to deliver a bag of looted jewels to the second son of a woman he once loved. Middleton accepts the package and starts for England. Hours later, Sir John is murdered in his bed. During the next few weeks, the colonel has a series of "coincidental" near misses as he travels by ship and train to reach the Danvers family home and fulfill his quest. Might these possibly be connected with the young stranger who seems eager to learn where he secretes his valuables while traveling? Or might the true culprit be the jewel recipient's black-sheep older brother? The answer is revealed after an evening of amateur dramatics, a burglary, and a violent snowstorm.
