Dunnie slowly plodded along as Shorty kept him to a slow walk. They had left the last water hole two days ago. If luck was with them, they would reach the next one before sundown. Shorty had been after the Brice Newman gang for a week. Everywhere he turned, he hit a cold trail. As that gang left a town or settlement, they scattered leaving no tracks to follow. Why they cut across the desert now was something Shorty couldn’t figure out. Where were they headed? Do they know where every water hole is?
