Lander Phillips was a thirty-five-year-old hard-working man. He owned his own ranch free and clear. He did his own cooking and cleaning, riding fence and gathering hay. He took care of all his animals. Every Saturday night he would ride into town and have one drink, then go back home and take care of his horse. Every Sunday he sat in the last row in church and listened to the word of God. On this Sunday the preacher was on a hell’s fire and brimstone rant. “If you harm your neighbor, if you rob and steal, if you lie and cheat, one dark night when least expected the Devil, Satan himself will reach up and drag you down into the Fires of Hell!” That scared the hell out of little kids, but grow-ups came back with “Amen Brother.”
