Excerpt from Hoffmann's Fairy Tales These charming Stories of hoffmann, the popular story-teller of Germany, are translated from a French version entitled Contes Fantastiques. The reason why it was thought proper to give them through this language, rather than direct from the German, is, that the French possesses, in a greater degree, the ease necessary to amusing narrations, and corrects the terse ness of the harsher Teutonic. The translator begs the same favorable reception for this second work that was given to the Strange Stories, issued a year ago, by the same Publishers.
