Among Hardy's final writings before his death in 1928, The Famous Tragedy was begun in 1916 after a visit to Cornwall with his wife Florence, partly to ascertain that the tablet he had designed in memory of his first wife had been "properly carried out and erected." The Famous Tragedy was published in November 1923, shortly before the local Hardy Players' production. Hardy's one-act play — "A New Version Of An Old Story Arranged As A Play For Mummers In One Act Requiring No Theatre Or Scenery" — was also produced in London and Glastonbury, and a slightly revised and expanded version published in 1924.
