Two childhood friends are divided by the secrets at the heart of their nocturnal civilisation and beyond the dark sea that surrounds it. This tale of cultural discovery and coming-of-age in a nocturnal civilisation watched over by mysterious masked priests, set on a solitary island surrounded by a dark and endless sea... Sen and Anlil are childhood friends about to be parted as Sen starts down the path of priesthood, and Anlil creates a sacred offering that could save her household's reputation. As the unseen consequences of their choices unfold, Sen is drawn deeper, towards the intrigues at the heart of the priests' palace, whilst Anlil is pushed outwards, towards the boundaries of society. Both risk their souls, and perhaps even their lives, as they uncover the secrets beyond the dark shores of the island that feels like their whole world.

Librarian note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name Paul Duffield is an illustrator and animator who takes influence from a fusion of manga and European comics. After graduating from a BA in animation at Kingston, he went on to win both Tokyopop's Rising Stars of Manga, and the International Manga and Anime Festival grand prizes, and is now at work on several upcoming publications. His current projects include a collaboration with Kate Brown, artist for A Midsummer Night's Dream, and a short story in Best New Manga 2, a compliation of cutting edge manga from around the world. Paul's sights are set on future where he can work on English manga and anime that rival the quality of those we see from Japan today.
